MP3 OF THE WEEK

Yes, this is still going.

This week, it's Breathe Me by Sia. Singer/songwriter from Adelaide (HAHAHA)... one of the main reasons I'm posting this is because it's the song they use in the final scene of Six Feet Under and it's really pretty/sad/depressing, but pretty. PRETTY.

That's all I have to say on this matter. Download hia (see what I did there?)

MP3 OF THE WEEK, OR MORE LIKE THE MONTH DUE TO LAZINESS

Hehehehehe...

So this week, we have Aphex Twin. I know he's somewhat popular but I've been really digging this song lately, and I NEED to break the law to send it out to everyone.

Anyway, the song is Windowlicker. Check out the video clip here (it's freaking awesome):

The song itself - very cool, very sensual, very sexy. EXTREMELY sexy, after you see the video clip. Experimental electronic/IDM (intelligent dance music) for the masses.

Enjoy!

MP3 OF THE WEEK

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

This week, it is None Shall Pass by Aesop Rock.

I don't want to write much about it because (a) I don't know much about the album or artist, because I pretty much fell in love with this song, (b) I don't know anything about underground hip hop in general and (c) it's groovy and coooooooooooooooooooooooool.

In a nutshell, it's awesome (Hella would agree), it's intelligent hip hop, everyone can like it, it's groovy and it's done by a guy as white as afternoon tea. He sounds fully black though.

It's 2am in the morning. What better time to upload a new MP3.

MP3 OF THE WEEK
Do people call you a weeaboo because you listen to no musicians who sing in English?

Does the thought of listening to jpop make your ears invert inside your head in terror?

Do you enjoy singing along to jpop even though you have no idea what they're singing, and for all you know they could be saying 'I am a shit eating titty fairy'?

Would you rather see Courtney Love naked than listen to the likes of Ayumi Hamasaki and Hikaru Utada?

If you answered 'yes' to any of the above, then Shiina Ringo is for you.

Wait a second, you say. That name sounds awfully Japanese, and if my powers of observation are still functional, why was that list of questions seemingly contradictory? Is there a chance that you are uploading what could potentially be jpop?

To answer your question, dear reader, yes.

Shiina Ringo is jpop with a twist. It's not sickeningly sweet and corny, yet it's unique. Shiina is not the type of artist where you listen to the album and think you've got your player on 'repeat'. It's unique enough to be different, but not to the point where you can't dance around and have some fun. Drawing quite a few influences from rock and throwing in interesting (yet appropriate) instruments from time to time, Shiina Ringo is a hidden gem in the dirty dirty mounds of bland, tasteless jpop.

The song I'm uploading is certainly not the most unique or best on the album but it's still very enjoyable. I have no idea what it's called because it's in Japanese, but it's a cool song.

Enjoy biznatches.

Also, there are 3 things in life that I despise. One is spiders. The other is random large insects that crawl over your notes. The third is spiders that won't fucking die even though you've whacked it several times with a fly swatter and you can see its web all over the place and maybe a fragment of its leg but it's still hiding away behind the goddamn towel, alive and possibly in pain from losing its leg but it's laughing at you, mocking you from behind that towel with its life, taunting you with its words: n'you stupid human, you can try and kill me but there will be more of us, thousands, millions, billions... and when you least expect it we will attack and take over your so called Earth, and take your jobs, and steal your women, and suck the fun from your existence like the way we suck the digested innards of a fly, and be popular amongst your friends and have sex with all the people you never had a chance with'.

I'm feeling generous today, so I'm going to upload two, yes you read that right, TWO MP3s. By the same guy, but they're both short and sweet so I think I'm allowed to.

MP3S OF THE WEEK
The artist is Eluvium.

With.

I Will Not Forget That I Have Forgotten. (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MOYOYI0P)

And.

An Accidental Memory In The Case Of Death. (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E4KQPCJ2)

Eluvium isn't actually his real name, he lied. Eluvium is also lovely - although classed as an 'ambient' artist, his album An Accidental Memory In The Case Of Death (also the name of the song that I'm uploading if you haven't noticed, har har) is a short little album (which should technically be an EP) of some modern classical piano tracks.

Listening to that album is like walking through a pet store and looking at the puppies - they're cute, pretty, adorable and unique, but they're too small and therefore useless as a guard dog. In other words, the only thing that makes this album not a 5* is that it's waaaaaay too short. Although, maybe if I taped several puppies together they could equate to one large guard dog. Hmm...

Uh, anyway, the other song I'm uploading is off the more ambient release of his (When I Live By The Garden And The Sea), which is an EP. Still piano influenced but not straight piano tracks like Accidental Memory. In fact, if you see me lying on the grass at South Lawn I'm probably listening to this. Seriously.

Now this EP is still highly recommended, but perhaps not for everyone. And if you're looking for music to jog to, or music to beat kittens to, you're looking in the wrong direction. Both releases are for when you're in the mood where you're lying down, listening to the rain. Or when you sit on your roof watching the sun go down. Or when you're procrastinating between classes and don't want to work so you lie on the grass on South Lawn and bathe in the sun.

THE RETURN OF MP3 OF THE WEEK

with Maximum The Hormone!

I guess you gathered from the name that they're Japanese. Well, yeah.

And the song name, Chu Chu Lovely Muni Muni Mura Mura Purin Purin Boron Nururu Rero Rero. For shiz.

So, here's my little description of them. As you know, they are Japanese, and as I've noticed the Japanese have a very interesting way of approaching music that makes it very... well, Japanese. And not just in the fact that they sing in Japanese (as if that wasn't a dead giveaway), they just have a way of structuring their melodies and songs and... oh well, enough about that anyway. So, Maximum The Hormone. A little punk, a little hardcore, a little metal, a little pop rock. OMG, DID SHE JUST SAY A GOOD POP ROCK/METAL COMBINATION? Yes, it exists.

Not only that but these guys are UP and ENERGETIC and UP and ENERGETIC like AUDIO COCAINE FROM CUBA. Unlike some albums that get a little flat halfway through or slip in a gay-ass song which lets the whole album down, MtH have none of that.

A very fun band, and an equally fun song as you can tell from the title. From the album starting with B. Buiikikaesu. I think I spelt that right.

MP3 time!

MP3 OF THE WEEK today is by Death From Above 1979

Unfortunately the duo are no longer, and only ended up releasing one album and several remixes of that album.

Death From Above 1979 were a duo whose music consisted of only drums, a heavily downtuned, distorted bass and vocals. That's it. Refusing the hire a guitarist, they make up for it by utilising one of the fattest, chunky bass sounds I've ever heard. Seriously, the first time I listened to it I thought it was a guitar. Death From Above 1979, unlike most of the other danceable indie bands (think The Killers) have a much darker, ominous sound with a high lyrical/musical focus on sex appeal, and in my opinion, have much better riffs.

Anyway, I can't really be arsed saying much more on this, but if you like dancecable, funky indie rock, this is the band for you.

Oh yeah, the song's called Romantic Rights. Has one of the cooler opening riffs I've heard. Sexy.

MP3 OF THE WEEK

I am being inundated with awesome music, I MUST SHARE.

This week it's gonna be The Gathering with You Learn About It.

The Gathering are a female fronted band, and the album that this song comes off is known as Souvenirs. I've only had it for 2 days and I'm already in love with it... it's a fairly simple album with some lovely melodic guitar/vocal melodies, but heavy laden with melancholy. The lead singer has one of the clearest, beautiful voices I've ever heard, and while she's not doing vocal gymnastics she highlights the sadness and longing in the music incredibly.

The song You Learn About It is one track I instantly fell in love with. It's hard to find any sort of fault in it; it's just perfectly beautiful, depressing, uplifting, hopeful, regretful, nostalgic, dreary... if you don't download this you're really missing out on a great song.

The album is generally soft rock, with some gothic influences throughout. As usual, if you like the song, check out the album: Souvenirs. If you like any sort of female fronted music, prog, metal, The Sinking Belle which I posted a while back, or just rock in general you'll very likely enjoy this track. Bon Apetite!

Another big'un:

MP3 OF THE WEEK

User Jen (aka kensbitch) mentioned that I should upload and I thought, why not. They're an awesome band and they're not well known enough (even though I know a few of you already know/like them). After all, the whole point of me doing this is to expose some not-as-well known bands out in the open. Even if my lame-ass journal isn't really 'in the open' BUT YOU GET WHAT I MEAN.

This band is Explosions In The Sky. I'll start off by saying that these guys make awesome, awesome songs. Epic. Some of the most beautiful guitar layering and instrumentalisation that you'll ever hear. I know I say that a lot, but that's only because I always mean it :D

Explosions In The Sky are, as mentioned, instrumental. Unlike some post-rock which mellows people out and stays mellow (ie bores the crap out of people), EITS rise up to explosive climaxes and crash down to calm ambience in a matter of seconds. You ride an emotional rollercoaster, feeling joyous and proud one second, melancholic and cold the next. The music speaks so much emotion and bleeds so much focus and beauty and paints incredible soundscapes. And I mean it when I say, these guys REALLY know how to use a clean guitar tone. My God.

The song I'm uploading is called The Only Moment We Were Alone which is off the album The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place. Another point I should make: the songs, to me, are perfectly named. If this song spikes your interest, please, PLEASE get the album. You will not be disappointed.

For fans of any type of post rock - comparitively speaking this is more alive than Sigur Ros, but less experimental than Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Wow, it's been a while eh? This week, it belongs tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

BLONDE REDHEAD

with

off the album

23

(I just wanted to write 23 in bold twice)

Blonde Redhead, aside from being a somewhat confusing band name originated when two Japanese people met two Italian twins by chance, and decided to make music together. One of the Jap guys left, and now it's a trio with a Japanese singer who has the most gorgeous, ghostly, delicate voice. It's a little hard to describe their music, but it's a nice mix of indie, electronica and pop/rock. You're most likely guaranteed to be hooked on this album... I know I am. If any of you liked the I Am X song I posted sometime last year, you're probably going to like these guys too.

They're coming down to Melbourne soon, tickets on sale already for anyone who's interested. And check out the awesome cover:

---------------------------------

I'm going to write about my perfect pizza.

It needs to have a fairly thin base, not too thin to be crispy and cut me a second mouth (although that would be rather useful) but not too thick to feel like I'm eating a loaf of bread with tomato sauce. No crusty crumbly bases either. The crust should be crisp on the outside but nice and bready on the inside - but not too thick of course - and flavouring should reach all the way to the crust so that my tastebuds remain somewhat entertained.

Topping - well, we all know that margherita pizza is not real pizza, and we all know that pineapple and ham, despite what everyone says, DO NOT GO TOGETHER. Topping should have a good quality ham (not that starchy salty shit), generous slices of fresh mushroom, slices of firm, unsalted black olives, sparing amounts of crispy green capsicum and, of course, a nice sprinkle of mozzarella (not of the plastic oily variety). Topping should be at least 3-4 times thicker than the base, which will have a thin spread of tomato sauce and herbs. Not too much tomato sauce though - one of my pet peeves with pizza is that they always put too much tomato sauce and the whole topping just slides off.

So that's my perfect pizza. Criticise, fantasise, write your own perfect pizza.

WINAMP MEDIA FILE OF THE WEEK
Yeah, I ripped this one in the wrong format. Oops.

Anyway, this week it's Vhiessu by Thrice

This song comes off the album 'Vhiessu' (which has a mad-ass cover by the way) which I think many of you will like, so I'll recommend to all. Thrice are basically a something/alt band, but this album transcends that label. In other words, it's not your typical boring shitty pop-punk.

This song is really beautiful. I love it. I'm lazy today and I can't be bothered writing a serious description, but seriously, EVERYONE WILL LIKE THIS SONG. It's so nice... *tear*

MP3 OF THE WEEK

It has come to my attention that Sunn O))) & Boris have written probably one of the most beautiful songs I've heard.

N.B. Sunn O))) is pronouced as just 'sun'. The O))) is supposed to represent a sun's rays. Don't be a noob and try and pronouce it 'Sunnn-oo bracket bracket bracket'.

The Sinking Belle (Blue Sheep) which features guest vocals by Jesse Sykes, ethereal, atmospheric, beautiful, crushingly depressing, absolutely gorgeous song. Off the album Altar, a collaboration between American drone band Sunn O))) and Japanese band Boris, this one is by far one of my favourite tracks off the album. If any of you would like to start getting into some ambient, doomy drone music I'd suggest checking out the album, but if not then this song will suffice. It's different from the rest of the songs as this is probably the only one with any structure (haha)... but seriously, this song is fucking gorgeous and if you don't agree then you are inhuman.

So, I guess Pelican didn't go down too well with you guys... :\

Never fear, I've got a good one this week (not that Pelican wasn't good, but anyway)...

This week, we introduce Katatonia with the song Teargas (~3MB)

Since I'm fairly lazy today, I'm gonna do this quickly.

Katatonia (not to be confused with indie band Catatonia) started out doing doom metal, several years and members later, they did a bit of a turn-around with the sound and toned it down. Now, I suppose, you could say they are melancholic alternative rock. That's how I'd call it.

Melancholic eh? Yeah, the singer sounds like he wants to kill himself. In the laziest way possible.

Teargas is off the album Last Fair Deal Gone Down. And as always, if you like this then look at the rest of the album; I really think you guys can dig this band. And would I lie about that? :)

MP3 OF THE WEEK
So this week's new MP3. I said I'd upload some Pelican, so I'm uploading some Pelican.

*patiently waits for file to upload*

I think I'm taking a bit of a risk uploading a 14MB song by Pelican... but I did fall head over heels for this band a few weeks ago so they deserve something.

Pelican (aside from being named after a goofy looking bird) are an instrumental band from America, and the song I'm uploading is called 'Drought' (lol drought) off the album 'Australasia'. I didn't know how to describe this band without saying 'sounds like Isis', and Wikipedia says it's 'post-metal' (post-rock influenced metal). Having said that, Pelican maintain a sludgy, heavy sound without being too overbearing to the average listener - in other words, it's heavy, but not TOO heavy. Which is why I think you guys might like this.

As always, the recommendations don't end there. If you like what you hear, check out Isis next - a very similar band with a guitar tone that's just as awesome.

MP3 OF THE WEEK - CHINA EDITION!
For a limited time only, MP3 of the week now comes across your screen.

Like so!

This week, brought to you by:

The Flaming Lips

with

Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt. 1

So, The Flaming Lips. Interesting band name you might think, and equally interesting song titles. This particular track comes off the spaceman-futuristic-metalloid sounds of the aptly titled Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots which features layered instrumentation in the indie/alternative vein with a splash of electronica. Memorable catchy songs without overwhelming the mind with complexity. Anyway, if you like the song by all means check out the album... and yes, there is a part 2 to this song, and it's pretty awesome if you like Nintendo-esque melodies with screaming. Mmmm :)

Stay tuned next week (month?) for PELICAN.

Omfg... I can't stop listening to The Postal Service. It's really bad.

The District Sleeps Tonight > Such Great Heights. Although they both are fantastic songs.

ANYWAY.

MP3 OF THE WEEEEEKNESS

So, I've been listening to this band on high high rotation for the whole week. No, it's not The Postal Service (OMG REALLY???), but the lovely The Butterfly Effect. Yep.

The Butterfly Effect are pretty much an alt rock band from Australia... with addictively catchy riffs, funky beats and a singer who has one of the most beautiful voices I've heard in rock. The music itself is heavily focussed on a rock beat with emphasis on the crotchet beats in 4/4 time. Their music soars, then glides, then crashes hard on the ground, then jumps back up again and runs a 20km marathon. Awesome.

The song I've got here is called Reach off the album Imago, which I highly recommend. Enjoy, enjoy, and don't forget to tell me how awesome this band are.

MP3 of the... week?

Huh... ok.

Long time no MP3!

Anyway... this week (the idea is laughable, but anyway) the MP3 goes to The Engine Driver by the lovely band, The Decemberists.

So, I fell in love with this band fairly recently, having picked up Picaresque after recognising the band name, but having not heard anything about or by them, I thought to check it out on a whim. I'm so goddamn glad I did.

This album is just magnificent. There is a strong storytelling element in the album; characters and scenery are painted vividly through the poetic lyrics and the layered yet simple intrumentation. At times heart wrenching, at times lively and uplifting, at times melancholic and nostalgic, it covers such a wide spectrum that you can't ever NOT be in the mood to listen. This is a truly diverse, beautiful album and I really can't sing its praises enough.

For the genre nerds, this is leaning towards the indie pop/folk categories.

The Engine Driver is just one of the many favourites on this album. Other notables include: The Infanta, Eli The Barrow Boy, From My Own True Love, Of Angels and Angles, and On The Bus Mall. Although the whole album is just fucking great :D

And although this won't matter to any of you, the drummer uses a sizzle cymbal in the song :D

MP3 OF THE WEEK
I'm getting so sporadic with this. I should just call it, 'A New Song That You Should All Download', or ANSTYSAD. Ansty-sad. An-stee-sad.

Anyway, on with the song... this week brought to you by Peeping Tom.

Since I saw the video clip on TV the other week I'm guessing that this song is fairly mainstream and some of you might have already heard it.

But if you haven't, get it.

Peeping Tom is a side project thingamabob from the awesome Mike Patton (ex Faith No More) who sings and sports a nifty moustache in the video clip of this song, 'Mojo'. Gotta get my mojo runnin'.

If you like this song (or already do) you must check out the rest of the album; Mike collaborates with a stack of artists, ie Kid Koala, Massive Attack and Norah Jones who says MOTHERFUCKER FOUR TIMES in 'Sucker'. You heard right.

On another note, this album isn't really one particular genre. It's like a weird mash of pop, electronic, experimental, rock and hip hop. It's good mash though... kinda like mash potatoes with extra butter. Mmmm.

Get it 'ere:

MP3 of the Week~!

This week, we have The Sound of Animals Fighting.
I was deathly obsessed with this band for some time.
Animals Fighting are an experimental/avant-garde/prog outfit.
But this is one of their normal songs.
I can't guarantee that you'll like their other songs, but it's worth looking into anyway.
This song is a little depressing.
~6MB

A little random fact: TSOAF have this recording process where the lead singer of the band records every member of the band playing individually; that is, the drummer will be recorded playing his kit part by himself. However, until the album's released, they don't get to hear what the other members play. The Mars Volta do that as well. I thought that was pretty interesting.

Oh yeah. The song's called 'The Heretic'
